I’ve got an analogy to make. It’s not an obvious one and you might not buy it at first, but stick with me here. EBooks are like sponges.

Think about it this way: have you ever been to a dinner party at a friend’s place and, eager to help clean up afterwards, realized you can’t because you have no idea where the sponge is? It turns out your friend is a Marie Kondo convert and she’s hidden it in a drawer—but you don’t know that! If only she’d told you, you could be the after-party hero, instead of the unhelpful schlub twiddling their thumbs by a sink full of dishes.

Well, eBooks can be like that valuable sponge sitting unused in a drawer. If no one knows that they’re available, they’re not going to get used. And students will miss out on their interactive features and increased accessibility. So how exactly do you get the word out?

April Dawkins and Karen Gavigan, who spoke with librarians across two states to learn about their eBook circulation, have answers for us. Their research showed that intentional promotion makes a significant impact on getting eBooks into students’ hands.
