Located on an island a few miles off the coast of present-day Tanzania in East Africa, the city-state of Kilwa became a center of trade for African, Islamic, and Indian Ocean societies. In this activity, students will summarize the geographic, economic, and cultural factors that led to Kilwa’s rise as a trading empire.
