World History Completes ABC-CLIO Schools Social Studies Web Site Suite

Curriculum-Aligned Web Site Connects Students to the World

Santa Barbara, CA—August 22, 2002 – ABC-CLIO Schools, an award-winning publisher of middle and high school social studies materials, today announced that its standards-based web site, World History, is now available online. The web site is aligned with secondary schools curriculum and covers those historic events that shaped today’s society from the 1500s to the present.

From daVinci and Shakespeare leading Europe into the Renaissance to Voltaire and Rousseau challenging the establishment with their Enlightenment movement to world explorations by Drake and Cook to Hitler and Stalin and the conflicts of the 20th century; the World History web site takes students beyond the textbook to explore the events, people, and movements that have woven—and continue to alter—the living fabric of world history. Students develop historical research, analysis and interpretation skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of the legacy of the past.

World History is a reference-to-curriculum resource with a continually updated database and multiple learning paths to guide dynamic student inquiry. The World History web site offers librarians, teachers, and students:

  • Rich, Authoritative, Relevant Reference: thousands of curriculum-relevant entries from citable sources that provide enhanced learning opportunities for students
  • Correlation with Curriculum: teachers and librarians can customize the site to correlate with their standards, textbooks, and topics of study
  • In-depth Topic Explorations: comprehensive modules on key learning concepts that lead students to dynamic learning threads, activities, self-testing, and discussion questions
  • Support of National and State Standards: materials can be correlated to support national and selected state standards to produce achievement-oriented results
  • Compelling and Comprehensive Resources: Biographies, maps, primary source documents, statistics, audio clips, events, timelines, and more are accessible by keyword searches
  • Timesaving Lesson Planning Tools: administrative tools allow educators to communicate with students and create tests, handouts and discussion questions
  • Topical Features and This Day in History: daily interactive Day in History and current topical feature stories keep the content fresh and appealing
  • Easy to Use Environment: a graphically inviting and intuitive interface ensures a positive user experience for students and faculty alike

The web site has been designed to be user-friendly and achievement-oriented for all stakeholders. Teachers can post announcements, a syllabus, tests, discussion questions, handouts and more for each class. Students can scan class announcements, develop analytical thinking skills, and self-administer tests to assess their own learning.
