FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABC-CLIO AND GREENWOOD HONORED BY RECENT MAJOR AWARD WINS, INCLUDING THE DARTMOUTH MEDAL

Santa Barbara, CA — February 2, 2009 — It was announced at an awards ceremony during ALA's Midwinter Conference in Denver that RUSA's Dartmouth Medal for the most outstanding and significant reference work of the year went to Greenwood Press's Pop Culture Universe. This marks the first Dartmouth win for Greenwood and ABC-CLIO, and the latest in a string of major awards won by the newly integrated company.

Pop Culture Universe, which presents material from over 300 sources with a clear and fun interface and state-of-the-art interactive features, including a blog on its homepage, is the first electronic recipient of the Dartmouth Medal.

In addition, the following titles were cited as RUSA Outstanding Reference Sources:

  • Books and Beyond: The Greenwood Encyclopedia of New American Reading. Kenneth Womack, ed. 4 vols. Greenwood, 2008.

  • Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales. Donald Haase, ed. 3 vols. Greenwood, 2008.

  • Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A Political, Social and Military History. Spencer C. Tucker, ed. 4 vols. ABC-CLIO, 2008.
"It's been especially gratifying to have both Greenwood and ABC-CLIO singled out with honors as prestigious as the Dartmouth Medal, RUSA Outstanding Reference Sources, and others," said Becky Snyder, President of ABC-CLIO. "This underlines the excellence of our products, and gets us off to a fantastic start together."

In late 2008, Release 2.0 of ABC-CLIO's eight online history, issues and geography databases added another honor to its growing list of awards from the education, library and technology communities. The databases were among 10 products named as Legacy Winners in "Tech & Learning" magazine's 26th Annual Awards of Excellence. This category honors previously award-winning products that have made significant enhancements and evolved with the changing technology to continue to offer the highest quality experiences for educators and students. The award winners were featured in a recent issue of "Tech & Learning" magazine.
