ABC-CLIO and Society for Military History Launch Research Grants
New Program Encourages Outstanding Scholarship in the Study of War and Conflict

Santa Barbara, CA — September 14, 2006 — ABC-CLIO, the leader in history reference publishing, and the Society for Military History have joined forces to support research on war and conflict by providing two annual grants of $500 each to doctoral students and professional historians. The grants are designed to support research already in progress, helping scholars complete projects that might be stalled from lack of funding or that could deliver better results with additional funds.

“The study of war and conflict is important to us all. ABC-CLIO is committed to supporting scholarship in military history and to making that scholarship accessible and meaningful to today's students,” said Becky Snyder, President of ABC-CLIO. “Supporting the research process by working with the Society for Military History on grants like these is central to our mission as a history publisher.”

Grants are available to members of the Society for Military History who are either students enrolled in a doctoral program or professional full-time historians who have not yet attained a Ph.D. The first grants will be presented at the Society for Military History's Annual Conference in April 2007. Applications are due November 1, 2006, and will require a statement of no more than 500 words describing the research project. The description should include specific uses to which the funds will be put and indicate support the project has already received. A one-page bibliography of the most recent and relevant secondary works on the topic as well as a current curriculum vitae are also required.

Applications will be judged by a committee made up of Society members and an ABC-CLIO representative. For more information about the grants, please visit http://smh-hq.org/abcclio.html.

ABC-CLIO's support of military history research is part of a larger program to advance the study of war and conflict and to make the thinking of the greatest scholars on this important topic accessible to secondary school students. Publisher of the most extensive references devoted to the topic, ABC-CLIO assembles top international scholars to create print and online references that explore the events and impact of history's most significant conflicts. These resources are designed to help students develop the habit of historical inquiry: to question, to examine historical sources, to develop sound judgments, and to broaden their perspectives. The company's award-winning line of war references will expand this fall with the release of The Encyclopedia of the American Revolutionary War: A Political, Social, and Military History, by acclaimed historians Richard Ryerson and Gregory Fremont-Barnes. A highly visual and student-friendly version designed for secondary school students, American Revolutionary War: A Student Encyclopedia, will also be released this fall.
