ABC-CLIO Schools' Websites Adopted by Georgia Department of Education

Santa Barbara, CA—January 25, 2005—ABC-CLIO Schools—a leading social studies publisher for middle and high school students—is proud to announce that four of its online subscription websites have recently been adopted by the Georgia Department of Education. The state recently released its list of recommended social studies textbooks and other instructional materials for use by their local school boards.

"Having just been adopted in the state of Alabama, we're pleased to be included on Georgia's Textbook and Instructional Materials Guide as well. Our comprehensive websites offer Georgia's social studies teachers and students more resources and activities than a traditional textbook, helping students build valuable historical inquiry skills. We look forward to meeting their curriculum needs for years to come," said Becky Snyder, Vice President/Publisher for ABC-CLIO Schools.

ABC-CLIO Schools offers Georgia a complete social studies reference and curriculum collection through the four comprehensive websites available on the Georgia adoption list: American History, World History: The Modern Era, World Geography, and State Geography.

Similar to textbooks, the websites use topical overviews to help students understand important people, events, and issues and encourage them to explore further by providing links to related entries. However, the ABC-CLIO Schools' interactive websites also challenge students to evaluate historical evidence, interpret current events, and make comparative analyses. Using the websites, students can search over 15,000 reference entries by text, reference category, period, or region according to their individual abilities, learning styles, and assignments.

Teachers save time by utilizing features such as the test creator, critical thinking activities, discussion questions, and lessons. They can engage students in history discussions by using the websites to create PowerPoint presentations of historical images, integrate history with the present through current events features, and customize learning through research lists—all while staying aligned to curriculum standards. Students can also access the websites from school or home, making it easy for teachers to work with them in the classroom and to assign homework based on the sites' content.

Since their introduction in 2000, ABC-CLIO Schools' subscription websites have won over 35 awards and have changed the way social studies is taught in secondary schools across the nation. ABC-CLIO Schools' websites have also been adopted by the Utah and Idaho Departments of Education.

School systems in Georgia have until June 3, 2005 to determine which resources they want to purchase from the adoption list.
