ABC-CLIO Announces Ten Millionth Serials User Session

Santa Barbara, CA - November 24, 2004 - ABC-CLIO, the award-winning history reference publisher, has announced that its premier history, databases, Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life have served over ten million combined online user sessions since both databases were brought to the web.

"Hitting this milestone thrills us because it shows that historians of all ages and levels of expertise are continuing to use our sites for history research," commented Vicky Speck, Serials Editorial Director. "We've also seen user sessions increase 30 percent over each of the past two years. This tells us that the sites are continuing to attract new users," says Speck, "Most database usage tends to taper off after five or six years, but ours continues to grow."

Combined, the databases provide over 230,000 full-text links to journal articles and reviews available from JSTOR, ProjectMUSE, History Cooperative, H-Net, Oxford University Press online journals, Taylor & Francis journals, Swets Blackwell, and Ingenta. "Our ability to link to many full-text sources helps historians access the information they need quickly and efficiently," says Speck. "There's even a Clio Alert service that notifies users when new articles in theirs areas of interest are covered in the database."

For 50 years, ABC-CLIO has specialized in developing and publishing authoritative, accessible historical references in print and online. ABC-CLIO was a pioneer in the use of computer-aided bibliography, experimenting with computer-produced indexes as early as 1960. In 1977, Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life became the first databases in the humanities to be offered in machine-readable form through DIALOG, the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company's online information system.

"Whether you're talking about the first issue produced by my father and mother, Eric and Inge Boehm, in a Vienna apartment 50 years ago, or the work done today by our team of abstracters, technical staff, and editorial staff, our focus has always been on building the most useful and innovative historical tools available," says CEO Ron Boehm.

Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life, established in 1955 and 1964 respectively, are research tools for students, scholars, and historians. They provide annotated bibliographical citations of articles on history, and include articles from more than 1,700 scholarly journals published throughout the world. Comprising the world's largest historical bibliographical database, more than 16,000 new entries and reviews are added to each database every year.
