ABC-CLIO Schools Websites Adopted by Alabama Department of Education

Santa Barbara, CA - December 13, 2004 - ABC-CLIO Schools, a leading social studies publisher for middle and high school students, is proud to announce that its online subscription websites have been adopted by the Alabama Department of Education as part of the state's just-released list of newly adopted textbooks for social studies.

“Only a few of the 22 adoption states are ready to take on digital-only resources—Alabama is one of these states on the leading edge of technology adoption. We feel very fortunate to be included in their latest list,” said Becky Snyder, Vice President/Publisher for ABC-CLIO.

ABC-CLIO Schools offers Alabama a complete social studies reference and curriculum collection through the four comprehensive websites available on the Alabama adoption list: American Government, American History, World Geography, and World History: The Modern Era.

Similar to textbooks, the websites use topical overviews to help students understand important people, events, and issues and encourage them to explore further by providing links to related entries. However, the ABC-CLIO Schools' interactive websites offer more than the typical textbook, challenging students to evaluate historical evidence, interpret current events, and make comparative analyses. Moreover, students can search over 15,000 reference entries by text, reference category, period, or region according to their individual abilities, learning styles, and assignments.

Teachers save time by utilizing features such as the test creator, critical thinking activities, discussion questions, and lessons. They can engage students in history discussions by using the websites to create PowerPoint presentations of historical images, integrate history with the present through current events features, and customize learning through research lists—all while staying aligned to curriculum standards. Students can also access the websites from school or home, making it easy for teachers to work with them in the classroom and to assign homework based on the content on the sites.

Since their introduction in 2000, these websites have won over 35 awards and have changed the way social studies is taught in secondary schools across the nation. ABC-CLIO Schools' social studies websites have been adopted by the Utah and Idaho Departments of Education.

Representatives from local boards of education in Alabama have until June 1, 2005, to determine which resources they want to purchase from the adoption list.
