Reference Books
ABC-CLIO’s reference book publishing focus is on American and world history, politics, law, government, geography, popular and traditional culture, current issues, and history of religion, science, technology, and medicine. Our encyclopedias, handbooks, and guides are used in secondary school libraries and media centers, college and university libraries, and public libraries. Since 1986, our acclaimed reference book program has won more than 80 best-reference awards from such important sources as the American Library Association and Library Journal.

For the Book program, we seek individuals as contributors, planners, editors, and authors.
  • Contributors of entries generally write between 500 and 5,000 words.
  • Planners work with our editors to define the scope, coverage, organization, and headwords of our multi-volume encyclopedias.
  • Editors review and edit the entries written by the contributors. Editors are often selected from the planners involved in a publication.
  • Authors generally write single volume titles of approximately 80,000 to 150,000 words.

If you are interested in working with the Reference Book program, please register at Become an Author. You will be asked for your contact information, CV, and interests. We initiate new projects each month, so our editors are constantly reviewing this list of interested parties. When they find a match between a project and your interests, one of them will contact you.

We work with scholars and editors on projects we plan and initiate. We rarely undertake books that are proposed to us, but if you are familiar with our publications and have a title to suggest to us, please contact Cathleen Casey.

    High School Publications
ABC-CLIO’s databases and workbooks are used in high school libraries and classrooms. They contain reference content and student activities. Our social studies subscription databases integrate reference, curriculum, and current events. Introduced in 2000, this product line has quickly become the most award-winning line in the company’s history. If you have experience in writing topic explorations and student activities and would like to contribute to our secondary school publications, please register at Become an Author.
