Frances Shemanski's new guide identifies several hundred of the main US events for fuller treatments. Major occurences are selected for their years of longevity, their attendance, and, uniquely, their impact (economic, social, etc.) on the host areas. Material on the origin of each festival, enhanced with historical notes and useful insights for attendees, reads like a very readable travelogue. Arrangement is by state, then city or town, with an appendix by type of event and a calendar of events by state and month. An index of festival names and types provides abundant access points to the textual matter. . . . Of interest to most public libraries and the general reference component of many college and university libraries.—Choice
