Reviews This compilation is translated and edited (by the China Statistics Archives of the University of Illinois at Chicago and the China Statistical Information and Consultancy Service Center in Beijing) from statistics published by the Statistical Bureau of the People's Republic of China. There are 114 tables arranged under 9 headings: General Survey; Population and Labor Force; Agriculture; Industry; Transportation; Postal and Telecommunications Services; Investment in Fixed Assets; Finance, Trade and Price; People's Livelihood; and Education, Science, Culture, Public Health and Sports. Figures are current through 1987, with some retrospective coverage (in most instances back to 1978). The preface notes that `some figures . . . are provisional . . . the final ones will appear in the Statistical Yearbook of China. Other annuals in this series, also beginning in 1988, will focus on industrial, social, urban, rural, and price statistics. In view of the high cumulative cost of the series, most libraries should consider three more comprehensive alternatives: the previously mentioned Statistical Yearbook of China; China Statistics Monthly (1988-,with quarterly updates available on disk, also published by the China Statistics Archives); and China Facts & Figures Annual, which features maps, graphs, photographs, documents, and narratives—Choice
