Educators Selected for ABC-CLIO Fellowship Program

Santa Barbara, CA — May 28, 2003 — ABC-CLIO Schools, a leading social studies reference and curriculum publisher for grades 6-12, announced today that the fellows have been selected for the 2003 ABC-CLIO Schools History Fellowship Program. This prestigious program provides opportunities for advanced study and collaboration to exceptional secondary social studies teachers.

The fifteen teachers selected for the inaugural year of this program are leaders in history education in their respective school communities. They include the 2003 California and Nevada Teachers of the Year, the chair of the South Carolina for History Education, the president of a local chapter of the California Council for social studies, two Ph.D.s, and social studies department chairs and curriculum leaders.

“In selecting these fifteen extraordinary social studies educators, we were greatly impressed by each person’s high-level discussion on the process of teaching and learning about history. Their desire to deepen their knowledge of history content and to collaborate on developing quality history instructional materials is commendable and will lead to a great dialogue throughout the year. It is an honor to name these educators as 2003 ABC-CLIO Schools History Fellows,” said Becky Snyder, ABC-CLIO vice president and publisher.

This full-year fellowship program includes an all expense paid Summer Institute, July 19-23, 2003 at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. Entitled Frameworks for Teaching about Conflict: Case Studies in Military History, the institute will feature guest lectures from distinguished ABC-CLIO scholars, including Dr. Spencer C. Tucker, professor of history and holder of the John Biggs Chair of Military History at VMI and editor of ABC-CLIO’s critically acclaimed Naval Warfare, Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War, and Encyclopedia of the Korean War.

In addition to the summer institute, fellows will participate in an annual meeting at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference and two other follow-up activities.

Moreover, fellows will receive a full-year subscription to ABC-CLIO Schools five award winning websites, each of which includes more than 10,000 primary and secondary sources linked to lesson plans and activities that are correlated to state and national standards and news articles and feature stories focused on current events. Fellows will also acquire a personal library of ABC-CLIO reference books.

The History Fellowship Program builds on ABC-CLIO’s half-century commitment to improving the teaching, learning, and researching of history.
