In seeking to recognize such pivotal articles, the award acknowledges the author's creative achievement in breaking the constraints of conventional thinking.
A panel of five members from ABC-CLIO and the Organization of American Historians evaluated over 50 entries before choosing a winner. The award was presented on March 31, 2007, by Nell Irvin Painter, the incoming OAH president, during the Awards Ceremony and Presidential Address at the OAH Annual Conference in Minneapolis, MN.
