ABC-CLIO Announces Spencer Tucker Award for
Scholarly Leadership in Secondary Education
Santa Barbara, CA — November 8, 2006 — ABC-CLIO is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the 2007 Spencer Tucker Award for Scholarly Leadership in Secondary Education.
Established in 2006, the Spencer Tucker Award recognizes scholars for outstanding leadership in advancing the discipline of military history at the middle and high school level. The award is named for Spencer Tucker, Fulbright scholar, retired professor who held the John Biggs Chair of Military History at the Virginia Military Institute, and Senior Fellow of Military History at ABC-CLIO.
ABC-CLIO recognizes and commends Dr. Tucker for his significant work in military history scholarship, and for making that scholarship accessible and relevant to today's students in a series of award-winning publications on war and conflict which include ABC-CLIO's encyclopedias on the Korean War, the Vietnam War, World War I, and World War II. ABC-CLIO is proud to be associated with leaders like Dr. Tucker and welcomes the opportunity to recognize other scholars who also feel passionate about taking the study of military history into mainstream curriculum.
The Spencer Tucker Award is intended for inspiring scholars who engage in activities which enhance the intellectual development of secondary school history teachers and/or students, and for pathbreaking efforts to build bridges between university and secondary school history teachers. The award includes $500 and an engraved commemorative desk clock.
Eligibility
Those eligible for the Spencer Tucker Award include scholars and professional historians who have initiated or participated in projects which:- Contributed to the professional development of secondary educators in the area of military history;
- Built bridges between secondary educators and military historians and academics;
- Engaged secondary school students in historical research, writing, or other means of representing their knowledge of military history in innovative new ways;
- Fostered partnerships between secondary schools and museums, historical societies, history associations, and/or other for-profit and non-profit organizations to enhance secondary history education; or
- Advanced military history education through the unique publication or other presentation of historical knowledge.
Nomination and Selection Process
Letters of nomination should be submitted to ABC-CLIO no later than January 15, 2007. Letters must include a description of the project or program, a statement indicating why the nominee merits the award, and a description of program results and the impact on secondary education. Other documentation of achievements (e.g. photographs, magazine or newspaper articles, written statements from those impacted, etc.) may also be submitted. The nominee's curriculum vitae should also be included.
The prize committee will consist of the ABC-CLIO Senior Fellow in Military History and ABC-CLIO staff members.
Notification
The winner will be notified in February 2006. Notification is sent to both the nominee and the nominating person(s).
Recognition
The winner will be announced at the 2007 Society for Military History conference in Frederick, MD, at a special reception sponsored by ABC-CLIO. Those unable to attend the reception will be sent their awards.
