Contributions to American Western History

Santa Barbara, CA — November 1, 2006 — ABC-CLIO is proud to announce the winners of the 2006 Journal of the West Annual Awards. Judged by the Journal's Editorial Advisory Board, the awards were presented on October 14th at the 47th Annual Western Historical Association conference in St. Louis, MO.

Given in effort to recognize contributions to the advancement of knowledge and history of the American West, the awards were comprised of three categories:

  • Journal of the West Issue of the Year, 2005, was awarded to Albert S. Broussard for his contributions as guest editor of “African Americans in the West” (volume 44, issue 2)

  • Journal of the West Article of the Year, 2005, was given to Matthew C. Whittaker to recognize his authorship of “Shooting Down Racism: Lincoln and Eleanor Ragsdale and Residential Desegregation in Phoenix, 1947-1953” (volume 44, issue 2, pages 34-43)

  • And lastly, the ABC-CLIO – Journal of the West Award for Contributions to the Understanding of the History of the American West was given to Peter Iverson, Regents' Professor of History at Arizona State University and President of the Western History Association, 2005
These 2006 Journal of the West Annual Awards recipients were carefully selected on the basis of efforts to bring the history of the west to a wider audience, including marginalized groups, secondary school students, and other non-academic audiences. The recipients' contributions can be in the form of service to the profession, innovative and stimulating writing, and/or the creation of new and inventive ways of bringing the history of the region to a wider audience.

Journal of the West is an illustrated quarterly devoted to the history and culture of the American West. Each issue of the Journal is highlighted by a series of articles on a theme central to the history and life of the region. For more information, please visit journalofthewest.abc-clio.com.
