Santa Barbara, CA—January 3, 2005—ABC-CLIO, the leading history reference publisher, has acquired Journal of the West from Sunflower University Press, and will be publishing the journal beginning with the Winter 2005 issue. The journal was founded in 1962 by Lorrin L. Morrison and Carroll Spear Morrison, who produced it until it was purchased by Dean Coughenour and Robin Higham in 1977. Dr. Higham acted as editor of the journal from that point through 2004.
"We are excited about this opportunity," said Ron Boehm, CEO of ABC-CLIO. "We're committed to continuing Journal of the West's long-standing reputation for quality coverage of the history of the American West—it will be a positive addition to the ABC-CLIO family."
The main focus of Journal of the West is the history, culture, and development of the American West through thematic explorations of the region's history. Combining that legacy with ABC-CLIO's 50-year tradition of history publishing, Journal of the West will continue to be one of the standard journals in the study of the history of the American West.
Dr. Steven L. Danver will be taking over as managing editor of the journal and will oversee all aspects of its publication. All queries regarding the journal and any ideas on future theme issues or articles should be directed to journalofthewest@abc-clio.com.
