Libraries Unlimited Authors Diane Zabel, Lesley Farmer, Melvil Dewey, and Jane Kurtz Honored by Recent Award Wins

Diane Zabel Wins Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award

Diane Zabel has been selected the 2011 winner of the Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award. Administered by RUSA, this award has recognized distinguished contributions to reference librarianship since being established in 1958. Zabel is the Louis and Virginia Benzak Business librarian at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania, and editor of Libraries Unlimited's  Reference Reborn: Breathing New Life into Public Services Librarianship  (2010).

 

The award will be given out at the RUSA Awards Reception during the 2011 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Lesley Farmer Wins Beta Phi Mu Award

Dr. Lesley Farmer, professor of librarianship at the California State University Long Beach and author of Libraries Unlimited's Your School Library: Check It Out (2009), has been selected as the recipient of the American Library Association’s 2011 Beta Phi Mu Award. This annual award, donated by the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society, is presented to a library school faculty member or to an individual for distinguished service to education in librarianship.

Deanna Marcum Receives Melvil Dewey Medal Award

The 2011 Melvil Dewey Medal Award will go to Deanna Marcum, author of Libraries Unlimited's The Data Deluge: Can Libraries Cope with E-Science? (2009), for her many accomplishments in American librarianship. Among those achievements noted by the Dewey jury and Marcum's colleagues who wrote in support of this award were her "transformational leadership in cataloging and classification, most notably the creation of the Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control."

 

The award will be presented at the ALA Awards Ceremony Reception on Tuesday, June 28, during the 2011 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Jane Kurtz Wins Kerlan Award

Jane Kurtz, author of Libraries Unlimited's Jane Kurtz and YOU(2007), has won the prestigious Kerlan Award for children's literature from the University of Minnesota Libraries. The Kerlan Award is presented annually “in recognition of singular attainments in the creation of children’s literature and in appreciation for generous donation of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection for the study of children’s literature.”

 

The award will be presented at the Elmer L. Andersen Library on Saturday, April 2, 2011.
